We are looking for candidates to join our team in Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Theoretical Division (T-Division). T-Division provides a unique and engaging environment that fosters multi-disciplinary collaborations to support the laboratory’s strategic basic research and national security missions. The Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics (T-5) group within T-Division conducts research across a wide variety of topics including fusion science, space plasmas, numerical analysis, computational imaging, optimization, and the modeling of critical infrastructure (gas pipelines and electrical grids). These application areas are tied together by research in novel algorithms, numerical methods, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.
The Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics group is seeking a qualified candidate to hire as R&D Scientist 2 to lead research in computational and theoretical space plasma physics. Applications include:
-The interaction of (small and large) orbital debris with the near-Earth space plasma, from characterization of relevant signatures to remediation;
-The interaction of spacecraft with space plasmas, including the development of spacecraft charging mitigation techniques and inverse spacecraft charging calculations for data interpretation from various space missions;
-The development of new space mission concepts with a current focus on understanding cold plasma (~eV) physics in the Earth’s magnetosphere;
-The development of new numerical methods for global magnetospheric modeling that treat the microscopic physics accurately. Part of this project is in collaboration with Slava Merkin and Kareem Sorathia at JHU-APL;
-The development of new modeling frameworks for radiation belt remediation based on artificial injection of electromagnetic waves to reduce the fluxes of hazardous MeV electrons via wave-particle interaction physics.
The hired scientist is expected to contribute to ongoing research in the group in these areas, with an initial focus on the interaction between bodies and space plasmas, and to establish their own research portfolio within the larger team. This will include leading proposal development for both internal and external proposal calls.
The candidate is expected to work in an interdisciplinary environment with substantial collaborative research. This includes recruiting and mentoring students, postdocs, and early-career R&D Scientists. A successful candidate is expected to publish in peer reviewed journals, present their research at conferences and workshops, and collaborate with scientists and managers to develop and sustain programs.
