The successful candidate will join the Fluid Dynamics and Solid Mechanics (T-3) Group of the Theoretical Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory to help lead the advancement of ocean physics within the context of coupled earth system models. This research will improve the predictive capability of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) including theory and algorithm development, implementation, simulation, analysis, and publication of scientific results. The successful applicant will analyze and develop a detailed understanding of the existing E3SM ocean model in the context of the fully-coupled climate system and then will help lead the development of a new ocean model for emerging computational architectures. As an integral aspect of this responsibility, the successful candidate will design, conduct, and analyze results from simulations across a range of resolutions and complexities to inform understanding of the behavior of the ocean model within E3SM. This will include investigations of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) bias in E3SM and its stability under climate change. The successful candidate is expected to actively develop and maintain the relevant model code, and routinely run climate simulations using DOE leadership-class computing facilities as part of a multi-organizational development team across DOE laboratories, Universities, and E3SM research teams. They will be encouraged to build an independent scientific career through lead authorship of publications, presentations at international conferences, and active participation in community workshops focused on development of new model physics. They will also actively mentor postdoctoral research associates and early career scientists within T-3 and LANL. | | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience and familiarity with Earth system model analysis and development including sub-component models
- An understanding of the computational physics of ocean modeling including underlying algorithms
- Demonstrated experience mentoring students, postdoctoral research associates, or early career scientists
- Demonstrated success in contributing to, and an ability to lead, research teams
- Experience with aspects of developing research proposals that resulted in securing funding or computational resource support.
Desired Qualifications: - Demonstrated experience as a principal investigator or in some other project leadership role
- Experience with analysis of model output in complex configurations including fully coupled Earth-system simulations
- A record of scientific publications based on analysis of simulation results from fully coupled Earth system models
- Experience working in large-scale, parallel computing environments (simulation and analysis), and with modern computing practices and codes, including git, Python, FORTRAN, C++, or MATLAB
- The ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance within a reasonable time
Education/Experience: PhD in Climate Science, Oceanography, Atmospheric Science or closely related field. Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM.
