CCS-2 performs research and development in computational physics for scientific, industrial, and national security applications. CCS-2 develops computational methods and algorithms to model physical phenomena, often in a production code setting, to answer questions of LANL mission and national security relevance and fundamental scientific discovery in areas such as astrophysics, radiation transport, turbulence, climate science, energy, manufacturing, and other areas. Leading at the intersection of machine learning, advanced computing hardware, and physical modeling, CCS-2 is ever improving the fidelity and time-to-solution of large multiscale and multiphysics systems. CCS-2 sits in the Computer, Computational, and Statistical Sciences Division within the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Scientific Computing. Along with its peer groups Information Sciences (CCS-3), Statistics (CCS-6), and Applied Computer Science (CCS-7), it supports the strategic technical focus areas of Multiphysics Simulation, Data Science, Advanced Computing, and a staffing focus area around Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging. The CCS-2 Group Leader is a member of the Computer, Computational, and Statistical Sciences Division leadership team and is responsible for technical leadership and management of the Computational Physics & Methods Group. The Group Leader will Create an intellectual environment that enables innovative scientific research, development, and mission delivery, which attracts, retains and develops a high caliber, diverse technical staff Actively participate in technical projects and effectively balance leadership and technical contributions Advocate for and increase visibility of the group’s research in national and international venues Build collaborative relationships with external partners and partners across the Laboratory to address mission challenges Develop strategic priorities and goals for the group and as part of the CCS Division Leadership team Serve as the direct supervisor of the group’s staff with responsibility for their performance evaluation, salary, and career development

Education: Bachelor’s degree in computational physics, nuclear engineering, applied mathematics or related fields, or equivalent combination of education and experience Desired Qualifications: Demonstrated experience in successful proposal writing and developing R&D programs Technical leadership experience in national security science programs Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with staff and stakeholders at multiple levels Working knowledge of Department of Energy programs and research offices Demonstrated ability to identify and respond to new opportunities Experience with long‐range planning and program development activities Ph.D in computational physics, nuclear engineering, applied mathematics or related fields, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM. with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement (partially onsite/partially offsite) from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Hybrid is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
