This expertise is focused on delivering technology solutions for national security missions. The group has great breadth and depth in many aspects of polymer science & engineering; from polymer and polymer foams synthesis to parts processing, a suite of polymer additive manufacturing technologies, and extensive characterization, aging and forensics capabilities. MST-7 also has a strong inorganic and organic coatings capability including physical and chemical vapor deposition for imparting novel functionalities on substrates and parts. In particular, MST-7 applies an extensive knowledge of chemistry, physics, materials science, chemical engineering, and mechanical engineering to study matter under various environmental and extreme conditions relevant to our customers. MST-7 is involved in many high-profile research programs, such as Inertial Confinement Fusion, nuclear weapons programs, including Core and Enhanced Surveillance, Directed Stockpile, and Lifetime Extension Programs, Global Security, Homeland Defense, and many civilian applications of materials technologies. MST-7 has a dynamic and collaborative work environment where scientists, engineers, technologists, technicians and administrative support personnel team within the group and with other external organizations to develop innovative solutions to fulfill unique mission requirements. The MST-7 Group is seeking nationally recognized scientists to lead the group's research efforts in materials development and qualification. These successful applicants will lead efforts in material, design, testing and qualification in support future material development efforts that support the weapons program. These efforts are enabled by a variety of unique synthesis, characterization, testing, metrology, and qualification capabilities. The scientist will need to interface closely with program and other organizations. The team leader will also need to direct efforts to develop state-of-the-art materials design and testing capabilities and push the technology envelope to probe critical physical regimes to advance TRL numbers. The candidate will have responsibility for leading the science and deliverables for the program needs. This position will be filled at either the R&D Scientist 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. R&D Scientist 3 ($115,500-$194,900) Develops innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems, expanding on existing efforts or establishing novel research directions. Solves a diverse range of complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity. Interface with program managers to set scientific direction and work towards material requirements. Leads in communicating results of technical R&D, including (but not limited to) publications, presentations, reports, intellectual property, technical products, etc. Participates in professional societies, National Nuclear Security Administration complex interactions, special assignments, and/or externa collaborations. Organizes internal/external working groups, meetings, and colloquia. Mentors staff to a high level of performance Influences organizational, project, and program strategies and directions. Leads technical decision-making at task level within a project. Makes decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives. May contribute to the development of technical standards. Uses project assignments to further organizational goals. Develops and implements project management plans, including scope, schedule, and budget, for small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks. Defines deliverables at project or major task level. Interface with other laboratories, plants, and federal program sponsors.
R&D Scientist 4 ($138,700-$240,500) In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D Scientist 4 will be required to: Perform the duties of Scientist 3 as outlined above to a higher degree Develops innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems. Influences industry standards and procedures and guides their application to projects and programs. Identifies, promotes, and develops new technical capabilities within the Laboratory Develops and implements project management plans for moderate to large high-risk projects. Leads the development of scope, schedule, and budget and defines deliverables at project or program level. Manages moderate to large, complex and/or high-risk projects, involving multiple task capabilities, and organizations. Actively participates in professional societies, National Nuclear Security Administration complex interactions, special assignments, and/or externa collaborations. Organizes internal/external working groups, meetings, and colloquia. Collaborates as expert to developments in industry and influences the development of new skills consistent with state-of-the-art. Establishes technological qualifications for field.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Master’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
