Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. The Accelerator Operations and Technology Division is seeking an R&D Engineer 1 / 2 for the Accelerator Operations Group. The successful candidate will work on the Protective Systems Team, which is primarily responsible for personnel access, machine protection, and radiation safety systems on site. You will work in a team environment and participate in activities that span from maintenance and upgrades of current systems, to installation of future protective systems. Your activities on any given workday will vary between troubleshooting and maintaining existing systems, generating/modifying electrical schematics, designing/installing new systems, assisting with procedural checks, and working with other team members. R&D Engineer 1 ($87,200 - $142,500) The successful candidate will be required to: • Provide maintenance and design support for major personnel and equipment protection systems and alarms at the LANSCE Accelerator Facility. • Participate in the design, testing, implementation and documentation (including drawings and schematics) of new protective systems, as well as modernization of legacy systems. • Actively design and troubleshoot a wide variety of digital, analog, and mixed signal devices. This may include working with PLCs, FGPAs, microcontrollers, interface circuitry, PCB layout, and enclosure design. • Complete a formal training certification program and participate in rotating on-call schedule, which will involve after hours and weekend call-ins when required. • Work closely with technicians and engineers from our own and other maintenance support teams across the facility. • Participate in team system installation activities, which can include working outdoors and ladder climbing. Occasionally work in radiation/contamination areas. R&D Engineer 2 ($96,100 - $159,000) In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D Engineer 2 will be required to: • Take the lead in designing, testing, fabrication, and installation of R&D projects. Will include schedule development, cost estimates, and project status reports. • Effectively collaborate designs with internal and external colleagues at the team, group, division, and laboratory levels. • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to team members. • Produce materials for technical reports, documents (including drawings and schematics), and presentations. | | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: - Design experience as an electrical engineer in both analog and digital circuitry.
- Demonstrated experience troubleshooting analog and digital systems using a variety of equipment (oscilloscopes, DVM’s, function generators, etc.).
- Ability to read and interpret detailed drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Experience with a variety of programming languages, such as C/C++, Verilog/VHDL, ladder logic, etc.
- Familiarity with bare metal FPGA and microcontroller development.
- Experience with a major CAD or ECAD Program (AutoCad, Mentor Graphics, Altium Designer, etc.).
- Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.
Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 2:
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the R&D Engineer 2 level requires: - Experience providing technical direction to technologists, technicians, and junior engineers.
- Experience in writing and reviewing technical documents such as system operating/testing procedures and engineering design changes.
- Demonstrated mixed signal design work, preferably incorporating bare metal FPGAs and/or microcontrollers into custom PCBs.
Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 1: Position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution related to the occupation. Up to 2 years of related experience may be desired. Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 2: Position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Desired Qualifications: Extensive PLC experience, including formal training in Allen-Bradley networks, ladder logic, and PanelView configuration. Experience in relay-based interlock system design. Experience with PCB layout, sourcing, fabrication, and troubleshooting. Ability to translate electronic design projects to drawings and system/circuit description documents. Demonstrated proficiency in electronic device life cycle. For example, initial requirement, simulation, prototype, testing, schematic, PCB layout, part sourcing, 3D fit and finish, acquisition and/or assembly of device, final installation, operational testing, technical documentation, and subsequent revisions/modifications.
