MPA-Q is a ~60-person, ~$20M, research and development organization focusing on the discovery, understanding, and exploitation of quantum phenomena in materials science, measurement, computation, and secure communications. Areas of leadership include: strongly correlated electronic and topological materials; condensed matter physics of actinide and f-electron systems; atom and ion trap-based experiments using entanglement in quantum sensing, computing, and simulations; quantum communication devices and cryptography for national and energy security; and ultrasensitive magnetic field measurement and magnetic resonance techniques for basic research and applied science. Research sponsors include DOE Basic Energy Sciences (BES), Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD), and various global security (GS) programs. The fundamental purpose of MPA-Q is to be the experimental heart of quantum science at Los Alamos National Laboratory, a scientific capability center for the realization of the Second Quantum Revolution through basic research and mission science. The new DGL will share in the responsibility for the growth, development, and stewardship of this capability center and its ability to innovate and execute, now and in the long run. This includes day-to-day management, problem solving, planning for the future, and implementing those plans. The selected candidate will work in a dynamic team environment where communication, teamwork, initiative, and follow through are essential. The MPA-Q Deputy Group Leader position is a half-time position. The Deputy is expected to support the remainder of their time through independent programmatic research and/or other program management activities. | | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Demonstrated technical and leadership excellence including: technical direction, program development, and good business practices A track record of accomplishment in one the group’s research focus areas or in a related area of science or engineering Demonstrated success in executing strategic priorities, obtaining funding for new initiatives, or developing a network of program and sponsor contacts Demonstrated ability to conduct and manage work involving laboratory hazards, e.g., chemical, radiological, cryogenic, electrical, laser, heavy equipment, etc. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage personnel with commitment to diversity, career development, and mentorship of junior personnel Ability and inclination to contribute to a wide range of basic research and mission science programs as needs and opportunities evolve with time Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires U.S. citizenship.
Education/Experience: a Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering and 5 years of related experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience. In general, an advanced degree (e.g. M.S. or Ph.D) in related to MPA-Q is preferred.
