Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. The work we do at Los Alamos National Laboratory delivers science and technology to protect our nation and promote world stability. In the Advanced Engineering Analysis Group (W-13) we lead the development of computational engineering solutions and expertise in support of national security challenges. We strive to provide our national security customers with timely and accurate answers to complex engineering problems by creatively combining cutting-edge numerical tools across collaborative teams. Our customers include the nuclear weapons program, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Defense, among others. Our group expertise includes structural mechanics, structural dynamics, heat transfer, radiation transport, thermodynamics, hydrodynamics, probabilistic methods, material modeling, and numerical analysis. Material models, many of which include complex behavior such as damage, anisotropy, and temperature dependence, are an integral part of all engineering analysis performed in W-13 and need to be carefully formulated, calibrated, validated, and maintained. Scientist 2 ($96,100 - $159,000) At the Scientist 2 level, you will work collaboratively with test leads, system engineers, engineering analysts, material modelers, and database users to develop new analytical tools, improve existing analysis approaches, as well as curate and develop databases to support complex engineering simulation workflows. The ultimate goal of this role is to develop databases and analysis methods and coordinate multiple capability development efforts so that they can be efficiently and effectively integrated with engineering analysis simulation workflows across the group. You also will be expected to communicate the results of this work through formal presentations and/or written reports, and to develop training resource like documentation, tutorials, and classes to encourage adoption across the group. Scientist 3 ($115,500 - $194,900) In addition to what was described at the Scientist 2 level, at the Scientist 3 level you will be expected to lead collaborative teams in technical work, to coordinate multi-disciplinary/cross-organizational brainstorming sessions in response to customer requests, and to mentor early-career staff. You also will be expected to define and execute strategic plans to guide capability development in support of group needs and the LANL mission. | | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Analysis Expertise A documented record of technical achievement in a relevant discipline, such as mechanical, structural, civil, nuclear, aerospace, or physical sciences; ability to perform analysis at an appropriate level ranging from hand calculations through more complex analyses using computational methods Database Expertise A documented record of technical achievement developing and curating databases, and demonstrated success in database use and deployment across many areas of user expertise Communication and Teamwork Strong oral and written communication skills, particularly in technical reports and presentations; experience meeting deliverable deadlines, both independently and as part of a team Relevant Work Experience Significant amount of experience performing complex analyses, database deployments, material modeling or related R&D.
