The Materials Science & Technology Group 8 is seeking a highly motivated post-bachelor's student with strong background in computer science and signal processing to develop advanced 3D microstructural analysis software and advanced high-resolution digital image correlation software. The successful student will have strong knowledge of C++ programming experience and object-oriented programming in general. The student will implement new microstructural features, optimize memory management and the scalability of the current 3D graph-based microstructural analyzer METIS3D. METIS3D is a powerful graph-based tool to efficiently extract 3D microstructural information to reveal complex defect interaction and extract 3D statistics. The tool serves as an ideal vehicle to advanced microstructural analyses through graph-based learning. Additionally, the student will implement a novel digital image correlation algorithm to detect discontinuities (e.g., slip, twinning) in metals to accurately track the local strain evolution during deformation. The software will enable discovery of new plastic deformation mechanisms and quantitative HR-DIC for materials deformation. Successful student will have strong knowledge of signal processing, mathematical analysis, and optimization. The student will be working in a highly interdisciplinary team with a diverse background.
