At the Space Instrument Realization Group, ISR-5, you will define technical requirements to meet mission objectives, lead development efforts, report progress across all levels of management, collaborate with industry partners, and direct system integration for advanced space systems including satellite space vehicles. The Engineer in this position is a recognized technical expert with experience across the product lifecycle of space systems, from development to operations. This engineer should have extensive experience leading activities across multiple engineering disciplines, setting strategic direction for engineering organizations, solving difficult and multifaceted problems, and managing large, complex, and/or high-risk projects. The Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division at LANL has been designing, building, and operating highly innovative ground, air, and space-based measurement and detection systems for nearly 60 years. We solve some of the most challenging scientific and national security problems facing the world today. Our interdisciplinary teams of engineers, technicians, and scientists work, learn, and succeed through a highly creative and dynamic R&D environment. We build, fly, operate, and analyze data from measurement systems deployed to space for verification of international nuclear treaties. We also develop innovative sensors and ground, airborne, and space-based hardware, and software systems for basic scientific research, including NASA missions such as the Curiosity and Perseverance Mars rovers, Van Allen probes, and IBEX.

Technical Experience:
Expert knowledge and experience in one or more space engineering disciplines. Demonstrated ability to create and apply specialized, state-of-the-art engineering and scientific principles, techniques, methods, and tools to provide solutions for an extensive and diverse range of project deliverables. Extensive experience in troubleshooting complex system-level problems.
Systems Engineering Expertise:
Advanced expertise in defining and deriving requirements for technical solutions to space instrument and space vehicle needs. Demonstrated ability to set, control, and enforce standards of technical rigor for complex project requirements, deliverables, and changes. Significant experience defining, organizing, and leading development milestones and other program reviews.
Project Management:
Advanced knowledge of all aspects of project management of technical or operational work, including defining work scope, schedules, budgets, priorities, and performance milestones. Demonstrated ability to direct strategic investments and guide successful completion of major programs.
Safety:
Demonstrated record of commitment to safety, security, environment, and quality.
Education/Experience:
Position requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred. Preferred from an ABET accredited college or university

Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
