The Earth Systems Observation Group (EES-14) in the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an opening for a postdoctoral research associate in experimental mineralogy/geochemistry. The selected individual will work in multidisciplinary teams that perform experiments under a range of geochemical conditions to answer questions relevant to one or more of the following focus areas: Laboratory research in the field of nuclear waste repository science Design and function of geologic repositories for spent nuclear fuel and waste Stability of engineered barrier materials (e.g., bentonite clay, shale/granite host rock, cement) at elevated temperatures and pressures Impact of radiation on materials performance, including gas generation and permeability changes Understand and manipulate mineral stability and water-rock interaction potentially generated in repository scenarios Will be evaluated using geochemical modelling software (e.g., EQ3/6, PHREEQC, or Geochemists Workbench) Thermodynamic and structural characterization of nuclear waste forms with special emphasis on calorimetry Chemistry under extreme conditions of engineered barrier systems

The term of the appointment is two (2) years, with the option to extend to a third year depending on performance and funding availability. Education/Experience: PhD in Geoscience, or related field within 5 years or will have completed all PhD requirements by commencement of appointment. Desired Qualifications: Communication skills as evidenced by publications and oral presentations at conferences The ability to work through problems using innovation/creative problem solving Laboratory experience measuring and identifying mineral phases (XRF, XRD, SEM, TEM) strong background in geochemical modeling and broad experience in analytical techniques is preferred. experience in the workings of various hydrothermal experimental reactors, experience with mineralogy and crystal chemistry of oxides, aluminosilicates, and clays experience in in high temperature aqueous geochemistry, water-rock interaction, and/or phase equilibria studies knowledge of metamorphic petrology Experience or exposure to proposal development and writing Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.COVID Vaccine: The COVID vaccine is mandatory for all Laboratory employees, on-site contractors, and on-site subcontractors unless granted an accommodation under applicable state or federal law.
