This exciting position will include a focus on developing welding techniques, part welding procedures, and completing both simple and complex welding activities to support a diverse program suite on the Welding & Joining team. The selected candidate will work with the team to creatively apply their welding experience to a growing number of research programs, support production operations at NNSA sites, develop process solutions to welding and joining challenges, and assist in maturing additive manufacturing techniques within the nuclear weapons complex. In this role, they will also directly interface with a variety of internal customers, including the weapons and global security programs at LANL, as well as external collaborators, including universities, private industry, and other government laboratories. Sigma-2’s Welding & Joining team oversees a wide variety of solutions to meet research and customer requirements; including, resistance welding, arc welding, laser welding, laser marking, laser additive manufacturing, electron beam welding, electron beam additive manufacturing, and brazing, as well as other novel methods. Team members often work in multiple disciplines and have the opportunity to learn new methods, as well as develop new techniques. Team research focuses on many exciting areas, including weapons and global security, nuclear energy, accelerator physics, fuel production methods, repair technologies, sensors, and more. The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties in this position: Lead production-centric research and development activities in two or more of the main research areas Develop and implement ideas with minimal supervision to optimize capability maintenance and growth in technology areas Collaboratively develop and maintain authorizing documents to perform work safely and compliantly in the Sigma Complex Use abilities as a subject matter expert to develop new techniques, principles, and concepts, and complete work in innovative and effective ways Collaborate with technicians, technologists, and junior staff on research or manufacturing projects Assignments are usually a significant portion of a total design or research project and require substantially more technical depth to provide solutions that are highly innovative and ingenious
| | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Demonstrated experience in high energy density welding and additive manufacturing Demonstrated experience in working independently and within a team environment Demonstrated expertise working with mechanical and electrical systems of large industrial equipment related to machining and welding areas Demonstrated expertise of instrument troubleshooting and repair Demonstrated expertise in meeting scheduled deliverables or milestones Fluent in common software packages including Excel, Word, PowerPoint Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with technical and operations personnel Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires U.S. Citizenship
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in a related field and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Desired Qualifications: Experience preparing welding procedures, reports, papers, or other scientific publications Experience developing novel ideas written into proposals or presented to both internal and external customers Understanding of Nuclear Weapons designs supported by LANL Knowledge of Process Engineering principles Knowledge of Classified Network Requirements and Restrictions Experience developing novel ideas written into proposals or presented to both internal and external customers. Experience in handling radioactive and/or hazardous materials Experience working in a radiological or nuclear facility Active or recent Q‐clearance.
