Method development will include measurement of non-traditional stable isotopes using multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in environmental samples. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to pursue research in measurement of trace actinides in environmental samples and radiochronometry/age determination in support of nuclear forensics projects. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will present their work at national/international conferences and publish their research in appropriate peer-reviewed journals. | | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Demonstrated experience using both single-collector and multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometers (ICP-MS), including establishing new isotopic system measurement protocols Experience measuring major and trace elements in bulk environmental samples using ICP-MS instrumentation Demonstrated experience establishing and refining chemical separation procedures to isolate analytes of interest from bulk sample matrices using column chromatography Demonstrated experience with handling limited quantity, contamination-sensitive samples Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team Demonstrated ability to work under pressure in a rapidly changing environment Ability to obtain DOE "Q" clearance required, which usually requires US citizenship In addition to a Curriculum Vitae, candidate must submit a cover letter addressing how they meet the specific requirements.
Education: A Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry or related subject area (e.g., Geology/Geochemistry, Cosmochemistry, Radiochemistry). The candidate must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment and be within five years of completion of the Ph.D. Desired Qualifications: Demonstrated experience in measurement of mass-independent isotopic fractionation of transition metals, such as chromium and titanium, as exhibited through peer-reviewed publications Experience working in a cleanroom environment Experience using Thermo Element, ICapQ and Neptune instrumentation Experience with thermal ionization mass spectrometry Experience with age dating environmental or nuclear materials (chronometry or radiochronometry) Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position. COVID Vaccine: The COVID vaccine is mandatory for all Laboratory employees, on-site contractors, and on-site subcontractors unless granted an accommodation under applicable state or federal law. This requirement will apply to those working on-site, those teleworking, and all new hires. | | | | | | Where You Will Work Located in beautiful northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. The Nuclear and Radiochemistry Group supports both operational missions and R&D efforts in bioassay, nuclear forensics, nuclear nonproliferation, safeguards, treaty monitoring, and weapons programs. Basic research is conducted in areas of radiochemistry, radiometric measurements, materials characterization, mass spectrometry, nuclear chemistry and physics, spectroscopy, and actinide chemistry. Programmatic work supported by C-NR includes maintenance and stewardship of the nuclear stockpile, nuclear forensics, international safeguards, nuclear nonproliferation, treaty monitoring, and bioassay monitoring. C-NR addresses immediate to long-term mission needs for sponsors, and has established capabilities and facilities for handling and characterizing radiological materials over a wide range of radioactivity levels.
