The Energy and Natural Resources Group (EES-16) in the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking intellectually curious graduate fellows for openings to work on projects related to Artificial Intelligence, Climate Change, and Environmental Remediation and Stewardship. The EM Graduate Fellowship Program (EMGFP), under the Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management’s Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program, is designed to provide science and engineering students and graduates from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) an opportunity for training and mentorship. This position offers the unique opportunity to shape the future of both energy sustainability and environmental stewardship. The successful candidate will join the Subsurface Flow and Transport team of EES-16 and collaborate with scientists in the group, other LANL groups, and external industrial and academic partners. You will be expected to publish results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present your work at conferences. The year-long, salaried fellowship will offer specialized training, leadership development, and professional networking, with the option to extend to a second year, depending on performance and funding availability.
What You Need
● Must be a U.S. Citizen
●Must have earned or be working towards a STEM degree
● Have been granted one or more degrees from a minority-serving institution
Education: Candidates must be pursuing or have obtained a Master's degree in a STEM discipline with a current cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Undergraduate cumulative GPA will be considered for applicants who have not officially started their graduate program.
Master’s In Progress participants will be expected to prioritize the GFP work assignment and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. It is highly encouraged that Master’s In Progress Fellows enroll in evening, virtual, and/or weekend courses while participating in the GFP.
Desired Qualifications:
●Experience with or willingness to learn machine learning techniques
●Experience with or willingness to learn multiscale modeling of subsurface systems
●Experience in programming languages such as Python and Julia
●Demonstrated ability to carry out independent and collaborative research
●Excellent written and communication skills
●Ability to work and communicate effectively in a diverse team environment
Work Environment:
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM.
