Sigma Division focuses on materials science and engineering, emphasizing metallurgical processes and research in support of the experimental testing program at Los Alamos. The Division is a service-oriented capability that supports a broad customer base, both internal and external to LANL, with high quality one of a kind prototype component. The work spans all materials from hydrogen to uranium on the periodic chart and may be classified. Performance of job responsibilities will involve exposure to hazards that include radiation generating devices, radioactive materials, acids/bases, organic solvents, and other hazardous materials. This position requires excellent work ethic and team building/mentoring skills, high level of initiative, and commitment to safety, quality, and documentation. | | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: - An expert-level skillset in metallographic preparation, with demonstrated ability to prepare and analyze a variety of material types.
- Demonstrated experience operating optical microscopes.
- Expert level skillset in operating characterization capabilities (SEM, EBSD, EDS).
- Advanced skill with computer systems and applications including PC software, and Microsoft Office Suite including data analysis, and use of databases.
- Demonstrated experience in leading small teams and/or projects; including ensuring execution of projects to schedule, scope and budget.
- Demonstrated experience in creating specifications for product/system/equipment design and/or preparation processes in support of research.
- Ability to interact effectively with colleagues, management, and external collaborators.
- Demonstrated superior verbal communication and teamwork.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, procedures, plans and Laboratory requirements.
- Expert level in image analysis software and coding techniques for streamlined processing.
- Ability to develop work instructions/procedures and integrated work documents.
- Ability to follow safeguards and security procedures in accordance with Laboratory policy.

- Experience with EBSD and EDS data collection platforms (Oxford, EDAX, Bruker).
- Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship.
- Experience using electron microscopes and focused ion beam instruments.
Education Required: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and/or experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable. Desired Qualifications: - Experience Authoring/co-authoring publications and internal reports.
- Experience writing proposals.
- Experience with hardness testing
- Experience handling uranium and/or beryllium alloys.
- Experience with nondestructive testing including radiography.
- Experience with Wavelength Dispersive Spectroscopy (WDS)
- Current “Q” clearance.
