As a Engineer 1/2 you will play a key role in supporting national security through the NEN-2 mission. How we do the job is as important as the work we do. These positions will be filled at either the Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. Our Team: The Advanced Nuclear Technology Group (NEN‐2) conducts research, development, training and operations in the application of passive and active nuclear measurement techniques, as well as radiography. Applications of primary interest to the group include emergency response programs, countering weapons of mass destruction, stockpile stewardship support, intelligence support activities, and international treaty verification. NEN‐2 also conducts nuclear criticality experiments at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC), located at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and operated by LANL, in support of basic research in nuclear chain‐reacting systems and contributing to nuclear criticality safety, fundamental nuclear data characterization, nuclear energy, arms control and treaty verification, safeguards and nuclear material accounting. NCERC maintains a substantial special nuclear material (SNM) inventory and expertise to support a variety of nuclear security missions, including nuclear criticality safety research and training, nuclear emergency response, nuclear nonproliferation, and support for other government agencies requiring hands-on access to significant quantities of nuclear material in numerous configurations. NEN‐2 works closely with NCERC Facility Operations (NCERC‐FO) and Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) at the Nevada National Security Site to execute unique nuclear critical and subcritical experiments. A key component of the NEN‐2 mission is to teach a wide variety of personnel from within the lab and national security partner organizations how to safely handle, detect, characterize, and manage nuclear materials. NEN‐2 staff members conduct classes in criticality safety, nuclear materials handling methods, and nuclear instrumentation. Your Role: You have the opportunity to strive for excellence while performing these key responsibilities: Engineer 1 ($85,400 to $139,600): Apply rigorous engineering practices to R&D projects focused on the mission areas of NEN-2 given above: Implement the engineering design process to R&D applications. Develop CAD models for prototypical experiment hardware. Prepare detail, assembly, schematic, and installation type 2D drawings in accordance with LANL standards. Perform thermal, structural, mechanical, electromagnetic, and other analyses for experiment designs. Assist staff with creating, testing, and installing prototypical hardware and software.
Engineer 2 ($94,100 to $155,700): In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, these are the key responsibilities at this level: Develops new methods, techniques or approaches in R&D engineering design to address critical technical problems. Sets individual and/or team direction and goals for well-defined tasks within a project. Scopes tasks within a project and defines deliverables at task level. Leads specific project tasks to meet scope, schedule and budget. Mentors junior staff and peers in technical and professional growth. May mentor students and/or post-docs. Contributes to medium to large scale proposals. May write small scale proposal for internal and/or external funding. May acquire funding support for self and for others. Maintains state-of-the-art technical expertise and knowledge in engineering design and calculations and develops new skills in other areas of design/calculations. Performs peer review within own organization/discipline. Actively participates in professional societies, institutional-level committees, special assignments and/or special interest groups.
| | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Demonstrated experience developing design solutions for mechanical hardware using commercial software (e.g. SolidWorks, Creo, Fusion 360). Demonstrated experience creating engineering drawings. Demonstrated experience using multiphysics software (e.g. ANSYS, COMSOL) and the ability to verify the results using hand calculations. Familiarity with operating instrumentation and/or data acquisition systems for measuring temperature, pressure, strain, and/or vibration. Demonstrated experience planning and executing engineering research projects. Demonstrated experience working successfully in a high consequence environment that demands excellent attention to detail, conduct of operations, and safe work practices.
Additional Job Requirements for Engineer 2: In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires: Education/Experience for Engineer 1: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution related to the occupation. Up to 2 years of related experience may be desired. Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or similar field preferred. Education/Experience for Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Research experience at a university or national lab desired. Advanced degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or similar field preferred. Desired Qualifications: Experience with working with various U.S. Government agencies and departments. Ability and inclination to contribute to a wide range of basic-research and mission-science programs as needs and opportunities evolve. Experience with implementation of experimental/prototype designs in an operational environment. Experience with R&D designs for hostile environments, such as high radiation fields. Experience programming microcontrollers (e.g. Arduino, Raspberry Pi) and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) in the fields of robotics, controls, and mechatronics. Experience creating virtual interfaces in data acquisition software (e.g. LabVIEW).
Teamwork/Collaboration: Demonstrated experience in scheduling, execution, and meeting milestones. Demonstrated experience in effective communication, both orally and in writing. Demonstrated experience working effectively in a team.
Training/Certifications: Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance (generally requires US citizenship). Ability to obtain and maintain Human Reliability Program certification. Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
Travel: Willingness to do domestic and limited international travel. Travel may be up to 15-20% time. Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.
