We are seeking a creative and highly motivated Embedded and Flight Software Engineer to join our collaborative and dynamic team! As an R&D Engineer 1 or 2, you will work on a portfolio of exciting, challenging, and cutting-edge scientific and national security space missions. The Space Data Science & Systems Group (ISR-3) is an integral part of the Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and has core capabilities in software development, mission operations, data exploitation, data systems development and integration. ISR Division has been designing, building, and operating highly innovative ground, air and space-based measurement and detection systems for over 60 years. We solve some of the most challenging scientific and national security problems facing the world today. Our interdisciplinary teams of engineers, technicians, and scientists work, learn, and succeed through a highly creative and dynamic R&D environment. We lead experiments on NASA missions, including the Perseverance and Curiosity Rovers, Van Allen Probes, IBEX, IMAP Mission, NACHOS hyperspectral CubeSat, and BEAMPIE rocket experiment. We also build, fly, operate and analyze data from measurement systems deployed to space for verification of international nuclear treaties, and develop innovative sensors, ground, airborne, and space hardware/software systems for basic scientific missions, nuclear nonproliferation, space situational awareness and remote sensing. R&D Engineer 1 ($87,200 - $142,500) Candidates at this level have an engineering background in the areas of software engineering, basic knowledge of electrical engineering, and an enthusiasm for creative problem solving and learning. They should also have technical initiative and experience in contributing to a project from an innovative concept to its use or application. Responsibilities and Roles at this level include: Assists in developing real-time embedded software following a rigorous software development process Assists in developing flight software for use on radiation-hardened processors to control, process, acquire, and distribute data from scientific satellite payloads Assists in developing embedded software for ground-based processors that simulate a satellite spacecraft/payload interfaces used during the development, testing, and spacecraft integration of payloads Assists with writing device drivers to interface with custom, Los Alamos designed measurement systems Contributes to continuous software process improvement, and learn through collaboration with other team members Assists in extracting and defining software requirements from system level requirements Interfaces with end users, scientists, engineers, and fellow colleagues to understand payload requirements and to develop software in parallel with payload development Presents results of work at team and project meetings Enhances technical and professional expertise through coaching, mentoring, and training Assists in developing Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and other system level requirements
R&D Engineer 2 ($96,100 - $159,000) In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you would be performing the responsibilities above as a fully-functioning self-sufficient professional. Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or another related field, and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
