This position will be filled at either the Inspection (R&D) Engineer 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Inspection (R&D) Engineer 1 ($94,500 - $154,600)

You will contribute to engineering R&D activities and operations in support of quality engineering in the Plutonium Production Quality Engineering and Inspection, TA-55 (PAQ-1) Group.  This will include assisting in the completion of milestones on multiple projects and programmatic objectives related to dimensional inspection development and design as well as quality evidence capture.  You will be expected to assist in developing robust inspection processes; to assist in developing Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) fixtures and programs to meet quality control standards and make suggestions with regard to procedures, standards and equipment to facilitate work and maintain product quality.  You may also be expected to apply knowledge of 3-D design and modeling capabilities.

Inspection (R&D) Engineer 2 ($104,100 - $172,200)

In addition to the above duties, you will engineer, initiate, and maintain inspection engineering activities and processes with specific engineering responsibilities in the areas of inspection process development and operations.  You will be expected to develop solutions to complex problems, design and implement new technologies, improve inspection cycle times, and maximize production yield rates.  Work will be expected to be accomplished without considerable direction; you can expect significant latitude in determining objectives of assignments, identifying and implementing emerging technologies, and development of technical approaches.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Inspection Development: Experience developing inspection processes including interpreting engineering blueprints, sketches, specifications and related data, specifying inspection equipment, characterizing process variables, and maintaining process performance.
• Metrology Knowledge: Knowledge of metrology and statistical methods.

Additional Job Requirements for IE (R&D) Engineer 2:

In addition to having advanced knowledge of the R&D Engineer 1 requirements, the R&D Engineer 2 must have the following:

• Measurement and Testing Systems Technical knowledge of measurement and testing systems (e.g. coordinate measuring machines, laser interferometers, optical measurement techniques, and open setup techniques).

Interview (R&D Eng. 2): If selected for interview, applicant will be requested to give a 5-10-minute presentation that describes their area of expertise and how that expertise can be applied to help the dimensional inspection team in PAQ-1.

Education Requirements:

IE (R&D) Engineer 1: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution related to the occupation combined with 2 years of related experience.

IE (R&D) Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

• 426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job. This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, 2 years of job-related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.
• HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well asperiodic medical and psychological evaluations.

Additional  Requirements:

• Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2.  Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States.  Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
• Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).  Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements:  To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Desired Qualifications:

• Manufacturing Experience: Knowledge in designing, planning, and executing projects associated with manufacturing. 
• Software: Working knowledge of various software packages such as Quindos, Calypso, or PC-DMIS; PTC CREO; or Solidworks.
• Equipment: Experience using Coordinate Measuring Machines. Hands-on experience repairing or assembling machine tools to accuracies of less than one micron.

·       Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

·       Position commitment:  Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.  Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use  was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
