The Applied Computer Science Group (CCS-7) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking experts in the fields of programming models, programming languages, compilers, and runtime systems (including distributed memory communications) to join our research and development team. Applicants should be established research scientists in Computer Science with experience in parallel programming on small- and large-scale distributed memory and accelerator-based architectures. Our mission is to develop and deliver novel approaches to programming, enhanced toolchains, improve overall developer productivity and improve performance of computational science, data science and machine learning workloads. This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2 or Scientist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. Programming Models and Runtime Systems Scientist 2 ($101,700-$168,200) The successful candidate will participate in activities to develop new — and augment existing — capabilities ranging from, but not limited, to the LLVM compiler infrastructure, the Legion programming system, supporting runtime systems, and conduct research to build new capabilities that are aligned with our overall mission and research directions in support of computational science, data-centric, and machine learning applications. R&D activities will span code correctness, language design, intermediate code representations, code analysis and optimization, performance portability, mapping (scheduling and affinity) of dynamic workloads across a range of diverse range of many-node, heterogeneous system architectures. Core activities in this position will include both code development towards targeted engineering goals, and the publication of research results. Programming Models and Runtime Systems Scientist 3 ($122,300-206,300) In addition to the Scientist 2 responsibilities the successful candidate must demonstrate advanced experience in one or more of the following: the LLVM compiler infrastructure, the Legion programming system, or in advanced compiler or parallel runtime system research and development. Additional experience working directly with data-centric, machine learning, or high-performance scientific applications. Core activities in this position will also include program and project development activities (e.g., proposal writing, the creation of aligned research and development activities). | | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements:
- Established expertise in a subset of fundamental Computer Science topics including design and/or implementation of, parallel algorithms, parallel programming systems, programming languages, compilers (code analysis, optimization, code generation, code transformation), and parallel runtime systems (e.g., threading, message passing, tasking, etc.).
- Demonstrated experience of strong programming skills in C/C++ as well as some experience with other languages such as Rust, Python, Julia, etc.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a technically diverse team.
- Excellent communication skills, as evidenced by publications and cover letter.
Additional Job Requirements for Programming Models and Runtime Systems Scientist 3: In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires: - Advanced experience with any of the following: the LLVM compiler infrastructure, the Legion programming system, task-based runtimes, messaging passing implementations, theorem provers such as Coq and Lean, programming language design including type systems.
- Knowledge of system/hardware architecture, design and implementation of high-performance data movement libraries, data storage systems, accelerator architectures (e.g., GPUs, FPGAs, custom ASICs), and the corresponding system-level and programming toolchain software components.
- Experience optimizing code for large-scale systems and/or heterogenous architectures. including locality, and scheduling, for both static and dynamic workloads.
Education/Experience at lower level: Positions requires a Bachelor’ degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Desired Qualifications: - Experience with modern machine-learning and data-centric computing libraries (e.g., PyTorch, NumPy, JAX), data-centric computing, and especially familiarity with parallelism and the underlying implementations of these.
- Ability to obtain a Q clearance.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
