The Safety Basis Division (SB-DO) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) develops and maintains Safety Basis documents for nuclear and high hazard facilities and applies a diverse set of nuclear facility engineering capabilities to provide innovative solutions to enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. SB-DO is seeking several Nuclear Facility Engineers to support the Laboratory mission and lead their respective group to develop and maintain nuclear, non-nuclear facilities safety bases at LANL and Nevada. Nuclear facility engineers integrate with programmatic, operations, maintenance, document control, project management personnel to ensure safety basis nuclear facility requirements are met in a way that allows for safe and compliant accomplishment of LANL mission. Identifies and/or leads safety basis activities within nuclear and non-nuclear facilities. Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 ($115,500- $194,900) Nuclear Facilities Engineer [Safety Basis Analyst] 3 will work with nuclear and non-nuclear facility systems and accepted methods for mitigation of risk from hazardous materials or facilities. Will perform hazard identification, hazard analysis, facility hazard categorization, accident analysis, and selection of controls. Development of associated Safety Basis documents including un-reviewed safety question determinations. Provides Department of Energy based nuclear and non-nuclear risk and hazard analyses for facilities, associated support equipment, and functional specifications and operations to control or eliminate hazards. Identifies the interrelationship of system safety basis requirements to facility design and process operations. Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4 ($138,700- $240,500) In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level Nuclear Facilities Engineer [Safety Basis Analyst] 4 will be required to lead and perform nuclear and non-nuclear risk and hazard analyses to ensure safe operation of nuclear and non-nuclear facilities. Provides procedural direction for development and implementation of safety basis documentation. Lead and perform hazard identification; facility hazard categorization; accident analysis; selection of controls; and development of associated safety basis documents including unreviewed safety question determination; technical safety requirements, safety assessment documents, facility safety plans and analysis. | | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Applies knowledge and understanding of safety basis principles and enforces nuclear facility engineering policies, programs, procedures, and practices Thorough knowledge/experience with performing risk and hazard analyses Viewed as subject matter expert within safety basis and/or nuclear facility engineering field at the Laboratory Develops, designs, and implements institutional Safety Basis policies and procedures related to quality, data gathering, analysis, cause and corrective action determination and verification, and process improvement activities Experience performing Unreviewed Safety Question Determination Recognized as a contributing figure for safety basis nuclear facility issues, communicating with stakeholders across most areas of the project. Spends the majority of time working on nuclear facility engineering issues associated with LANL or Nevada Hazard Category 2 and 3 nuclear facilities or accelerators. Additional Job Requirements for Level 4: In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires: Individual will lead and perform division level Safety Basis program and operational activities. Provides procedural direction for development and implementation of safety basis policy and procedures in support of the safety basis program. Expert knowledge/experience with performing risk and hazard analyses Develops and implements elements of 10CFR830 Subpart-A Nuclear Quality Expert knowledge of multiple safety analysis code applications and capable of independently applying and interpreting the models and their results Provides quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and requirements implementation support for Safety Basis Division Develops, designs, and implements institutional Safety Basis policies and procedures related to quality, data gathering, analysis, cause and corrective action determination and verification, and process improvement activities Provides direction for internal self-assessment and external management assessment for Safety Basis quality improvement of processes Interprets, analyzes, and resolves conflicting Safety Basis technical/quality issues Supports and implements software quality requirements for applicable Safety Basis codes per DOE and laboratory standards Develops audits, assessment scheduling processes that support Safety Basis Division and programmatic requirements Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Applies broad and in-depth knowledge of safety basis principles and practices in the preparation of Nuclear Safety Program deliverables.
Education/Experience required for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3: Position requires a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Education/Experience required for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4: Position requires a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 12 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job. DOE 426.2 requires a BS degree, 2 years job related experience and 1 year non-reactor nuclear experience for technical support personnel who perform work independently at nuclear facilities. Desired Qualifications: Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM with the flexibility for the selected candidate to work from a location other than the primary location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Remote is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
