This position will be filled at either the Environmental Technician 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Environmental Technician 3 ($57,800-$89,500)
The Instrumentation Technician 3 will provide technical support to the meteorology and air monitoring programs in the areas of instrument & sensor maintenance, refurbishment, calibration, field installation/removal, and some minor datalogger programming. This position will support other air sampling programs within the Environmental Protection and Compliance Division, Environmental Compliance Programs Group as needed. Duties will include air monitoring sample collection and equipment maintenance. This is a diverse and dynamic group and this position will maintain reliable operations of sampling equipment, instruments, sensors, data collection sites, and the upstream data collection system ensuring quality data collections in support of the National Laboratory mission. Duties include:
- Use of electronic test instrumentation in troubleshooting (e.g., digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, power supplies, instrument drive motors, & torque gauges).
- Failure Analysis – determination of instrument or system/process failures.
- Instrument refurbishments encompassing component replacement, alignment, and set up for calibration to specifications of record.
- Fabrication, repair or replacement of electronic signal cabling/wiring.
- Escorting of maintenance support workers & program support subcontractors.
Environmental Technician 4 ($69,500-$110,300)
In addition to what was outlined at the Environmental Technician 3 level, at this level the Instrumentation Technician will work directly with the meteorologist and other team members as a technical subject matter expert in electronics & instrumentation. Duties will include developing solutions to complex problems, which require the regular use of ingenuity, creativity, and independence. Duties include:
- Project coordination, scheduling, generation of Scopes of Work, technical reviews, Person-In-Charge responsibilities, and review of maintenance & subcontractor work.
- Calibration of instrumentation & sensors utilizing proper test standards & equipment.
- CRBasic fundamental data logger programming for existing program updates and instrument/sensor testing.
- Generation of periodic site & equipment operations/program operations procedures along with periodic status reports to include findings, recommendations, and possibly small group presentations.

- Experience working with instrumentation, sensors, & dataloggers.
- Familiar with the principles of alternating current (AC) & direct current (DC) electronics.

- Proficiency in oral and written communications.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety.
Additional Job Requirements at the Environmental Technician 4 Level:
- Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, and hands-on experience working with alternating current (AC) & direct current (DC) electronics.
- Comfortable communicating thoughts and ideas in presentations verbally and in writing, along with receiving feedback.
- Willingness to take on additional technical responsibilities supporting other group-wide programmatic activities in areas of electronics and the electrical safety program.
Education/Experience Required at Lower Level: Position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and 2-4 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the job description.
Education/Experience Required at Higher Level: Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and 4-6 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the job description. At this level, additional training, certification, and/or education may be expected, including associate’s degrees and graduation from technical institutions.
Desired Qualifications:
- Associate degree in Electronics Technology or similar program or certificate in related electronics specialty.
- Basic knowledge of interpreting electronic or electrical schematic drawings (to component level).
- Basic knowledge of associating circuit symbols with actual components to include solid state electronics (e.g., transistors, integrated chips, resistors, capacitors)
- Possess good mathematical skills (i.e., basic algebra) for calculation of electrical/electronic equations.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (especially Microsoft Excel) and experience with databases.
- The ability to troubleshoot electronics circuits & analyze problems, identify solutions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.

Work Location: The work location for this position is on site and is located in White Rock, New Mexico. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
