Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. The Accelerator Operations and Technology Division (AOT), Radio Frequency Engineering (RFE) group is seeking a high-power RF engineer for the 201-MHz RF team. The AOT division maintains, operates, and upgrades all accelerator systems used at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) complex. These consist of two 750-keV Cockcroft-Walton-based injector systems (H+ and H– systems), a 201.25-MHz drift tube linear accelerator utilizing high-power diacrode tubes, an 805-MHz coupled cavity linac utilizing klystrons as the primary power source, a proton storage ring, and roughly a kilometer of beam transport lines that feed beam to the five independent research programs. The RFE group is principally responsible for all RF systems, all pulsed power, and all high-power DC power supplies used to operate magnets on the beam transport lines. Low-level RF (LLRF) control and monitoring of the various RF sources used to drive the beam is critical to the high performance and successful operation of the accelerator. AOT’s Radio Frequency Engineering (AOT-RFE) Group provides expertise, support, and technical leadership in high power RF systems, high voltage systems, pulsed power systems, low level RF feedback and feedforward systems, and high current / high power magnet power supply systems. AOT-RFE’s primary focus is the design, development, and maintenance of these systems for the LANSCE Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) User Facility. This includes participation in current and future projects to enhance the capabilities at LANSCE. R&D Engineer 2 ($94,100 - $155,700) As a member of the AOT-RFE high power RF Engineering team, you will be working closely with other engineers and technicians and will be responsible for the operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of the LANSCE 201 MHz high power RF vacuum tube and solid state power amplifier systems. This includes design and use of associated electronics, interlocks, protection circuits, high voltage power supplies, and power electronics. The successful candidate is also expected to provide “on call” support for the LANSCE high power RF amplifier systems after hours and on weekends. The “on-call” assignment will typically be for one week out of every six, while the accelerator is operating (approximately 7 months per year). R&D Engineer 3 ($113,100 - $190,900) In addition to what is outlined for R&D Engineer 2, this level will also involve planning and implementing future RF system upgrades as part of a larger team. This includes a high power amplifier system to drive a new radio frequency quadrupole accelerator and a replacement high voltage system with higher power klystron amplifiers for a large portion of the LANSCE linac. The work also includes analyzing RF system data to guide design decisions for enhancements for improving reliability and performance. | | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Along with a resume/CV, applicants must submit a comprehensive cover letter addressing, bullet by bullet, each of the required and applicable desired skills listed below.
