The Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division seeks highly experienced mechanical engineers to support cutting-edge science and technology programs at Los Alamos National Laboratory. If you have a passion for designing, analyzing, building, and deploying instrumentation for space-based science and national-defense applications, LANL’s Space Instrument Realization group may be a good fit for you.
The ideal candidate for this position will be experienced in all aspects of the design, development, analysis, testing, and integration of complex space-systems hardware. The candidate will be well-versed in computer aided design and analysis tools. This individual will come prepared to engineer systems with strict limits on size, weight, power, reliability, and radiation hardness; and for use in extreme thermal, vibration, and acoustic environments.
In addition to designing complex systems for challenging environments, the selected candidate will be capable of working with cross-disciplined, engineering, and scientific team members within a challenging engineering and regulatory framework. Experience with nuclear facility hazard/accident analysis and safety basis development is strongly preferred.
R&D Engineer 3 ($115,500-$194,900)
This position requires at least a master’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university, and at least six years of related experience. The candidate will be a skilled professional with expertise spanning multiple engineering disciplines. He or she will be expected to lead research and design initiatives with minimal oversight, workshop and troubleshoot designs in a collaborative environment, and present the results of design and analysis both to the team and to the program sponsor. The candidate must be able to quickly get up to speed on designs already in work, assume ownership of components, and devise creative solutions to challenging engineering problems.
R&D Engineer 4 ($138,700-$240,500)
In addition to the responsibilities outlined above, the R&D Engineer 4 will lead mechanical engineering efforts on the program and will assist project and program leadership with strategic decision-making. This candidate will interact regularly with program sponsors, including briefing government representatives on time-sensitive and complex national security initiatives.
