At Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Infrastructure Services Division is looking for a Telecommunications Field Operator Tec to provide operational support services for the telephone field operations team. This position will be filled at either the Telecommunications Field Operator Tec 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. Telecommunications Field Operator Tec 2 ($51,200 - $78,700) This position will use your wide-ranging skills and experience to maintain all aspects of the traditional telecom fields and challenge you with new and exciting technologies to master. The ISD-TS team installs new fiber optic and copper circuits and maintains a site-wide copper and fiber plant within the 43 square mile telecommunications infrastructure, including cable air pressure systems. We also install and maintain many types of telephony devices in support of our unique customers. You will have the opportunity to hone your network skills in our robust VoIP environment, with daily Broadsoft and Cisco component interactions. Demonstrate your professionalism and responsibility for work control and circuit management with minimal direct supervision. This position will provide administrative and operational support to engineers and technical team members, and job assignments will include the provisioning and maintenance of TDM/VoIP switching, telecom cabling – both fiber and copper, and activities related to various telecommunications infrastructure including bucket truck operations and manhole access. This position will also support daily buried plant locating using top-of-the line locating equipment, as well as telephone (VoIP) installation and repair. Telecommunications Field Operator Tec 3 ($56,300 - $87,200) In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you should be fully proficient in the telecommunication field. Along with having a higher level of expertise, this position may require developing and implementing standard practices and procedures. | | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: - Three years of experience in telecommunication systems, methodologies, tools and processes.
- Knowledge of telephone installation, dispatch, and workload control.
- Experience in the use of standard telecom testing equipment, fiber optic testing/meters and splicing (fusion).
- Ability to partner with customers and define requirements.
- Experience in Microsoft Office Applications, SharePoint, Teams, Visio, and GIS.
Additional Job Requirements for Telecommunications Field Operator Tec 3: In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires: - Develops, documents, and implements standard practices and procedures.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a high school diploma and 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires an Associate’s Degree and 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Desired Qualifications: - Knowledge of federal facility communication operations regulations.
- Advanced knowledge of hardware and software integration, testing, IT network design and operations.
- Low voltage journeyman and BICSI Installer certifications
- BICSI certifications in the fiber and copper areas of data and telecommunications
- Experience with network switch and Ethernet operations and testing,
- Experience in utility locating, equipment, and marking.
- Active CDL driver's license
- Experience with bucket truck operations.
- Experience with maintenance hole activities (such as access, splicing, and air pressure).
- Experience with inventory management fundamentals.
- Experience with COMIT (Communication Management Information Tool) tracking Technician activities, workflows, billing, time, and materials.
- Experience performing utility locating work.
Work Environment: Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management. - Standing and Walking: Prolonged periods of standing and walking across varying terrains or construction sites, including climbing stairs or scaffolding.
- Hand-Eye Coordination and Manual Dexterity: Fine motor skills and coordination for handling small parts, cables, connectors, and using tools with precision.
- Driving: Ability to drive vehicles, including work trucks or vans, between job sites, often in different locations or remote areas.
- Crawling and Working in Confined Spaces: May require crawling under floors or into small spaces to install or repair communication lines or equipment.
- Visual Acuity: Good vision (with or without corrective lenses) to read blueprints, schematics, and diagrams, as well as distinguish colors on cables for wiring tasks.
- Hearing Ability: Clear hearing (with or without aids) to communicate with team members, understand spoken instructions, and hear alarms or signals from equipment.
- Outdoor Work: Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions, which may involve exposure to heat, cold, wind, rain, or snow, depending on the geographical area and job sites.
- Physical Endurance: The stamina to work long shifts, which could include nights, weekends, or extended hours during emergencies or outages.
