Group members perform research supporting nuclear non-proliferation, counterproliferation, counterterrorism, probabilistic risk assessment and consequence estimation of threats to vital national assets, technical assessments of nuclear devices or weapons, nuclear materials infrastructure analysis, and consequence evaluation of natural/man-made disasters and terrorist attacks. The successful candidate will work with A-2 on using pre-detonation technical nuclear forensics (TNF) methods against nuclear materials and nuclear facilities. This requires a solid understanding of the nuclear fuel cycle and nuclear reactor modeling codes. The focus will be on applying machine learning tools to nuclear forensics challenges associated with spent fuel and separated plutonium. The candidate will collaborate with scientists and engineers across LANL for data collection, sample analysis, computational methods and material science. | | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Experience with code development, such as MATLAB, python or other similar languages; Ability to and interest in learning a broad range of technical disciplines applied to technical nuclear forensics; Good written and oral communication skills; Applicants must have the ability to obtain a Q-clearance which typically requires U.S. citizenship; Ability to work effectively individually and in small teams.
Education/Experience: Ph.D. in nuclear or mechanical engineering or a related discipline completed within the last 5 years. Working knowledge of nuclear reactor modeling codes such as MCNP or SCALE; Experience scripting with MATLAB’s app designer.
